Annoyed, his wife threw a plum and a half-empty bottle of water at the bikers. That touched off a confrontation on the road that ended with Mr. Lien being dragged from his car and pummeled on a street in Washington Heights. One of the bikers, injured early on, ended up in the hospital. And video of much of the episode, including the beating of Mr. Lien, ended up on the web, filmed by one of biker’s helmet camera, prosecutors said.

Robert Sims, 36, and Detective Wojciech Braszczok, 34, an undercover New York City police officer, are charged with gang assault and have opted to let the judge, Maxwell Wiley, decide the case, rather than a jury.

Nine other motorcyclists who were charged in the case have pleaded guilty. The Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., did not pursue charges against Mr. Lien, who was driving the family’s S.U.V. when it struck and injured one of the bikers.

In an often halting voice, with tears in his eyes, Mr. Lien described his panic after being stopped on the highway and surrounded. He spoke of his fear for his wife and child, and his instinctual decision to hit the gas and flee. When he did so, his Range Rover lurched forward and broke the spine of one of the bikers, Edwin Mieses.

Joshua Steinglass, the prosecutor, asked what was going through his mind, and Mr. Lien said, “Complete fear of my life.” He said he asked his wife: ‘What do I do? What do I do?’ And she said: ‘Let’s go! Let’s go!’ ”

Mr. Lien, who lives in Lower Manhattan and works in finance, said he saw a small opening and hit the accelerator. He ran over some bikes, and he knew he had hit someone, he testified. He raced up the highway, one tire flat and flapping, while the motorcyclists chased him.

Officers were called just after midnight Monday to an apartment near 600 East and 500 North. There, they found the bodies of 19-year-old MacKenzie Madden and 25-year-old Johnathon Jacob Sadler. The two had been shot to death, Logan Police Lt. Rod Peterson told reporters.

Police on Monday were trying to figure out a motive for the apparent double murder-suicide. Peterson said it appeared Tolman and Madden had been exchanging text messages prior to the shooting.

“We believe he had been sending some text messages to the female victim,” he said. “He (Tolman) responded here and it appears that he kicked in the door and opened fire on the male and the female in the dorm.”

Outside Madden’s apartment on Monday afternoon, two women placed flowers at the door and wiped away tears. They declined to identify themselves, saying they did not wish to speak to the news media.

The families of Madden and Sadler did not wish to speak to the news media about the shooting, Logan Police Lt. Brad Franke told FOX 13.
