Rod Nilsestuen, secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, drowned yesterday while on vacation in Marquette, Mich., a small town in the upper peninsula, when he told friends he was going for a swim in Lake Superior.

Not long after that, witnesses said, the 62-year-old was carried off by a wave.

He had led DATCP since 2003.

In the summers he often volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, helping to build homes in northern Wisconsin and Michigan. Late Wednesday afternoon, after he finished work on a house, he went here, to Picnic Rocks, for a swim before dinner.

Witnesses saw him struggling off a sandbar, and emergency responders were called. Officials said his body was found floating about 300 yards offshore.

“He treated everyone that he met like you were family,” Randy Romanski, deputy secretary for DATCP, said.

He said the mood at the agency today was somber.

He credited Nilsestuen, who had a lifelong passion for farm

Six people died, including federal District CourtChief Judge John Roll; Gabe Zimmerman, one of Rep. Giffords’ staffers; and a nine-year-old girl, Christina-Taylor Green.^{[1][2][3][4][5]} Giffords was holding the meeting, called “Congress on Your Corner” in the parking lot of a Safeway store when Jared Lee Loughner drew a pistol and shot her in the head before proceeding to fire on other people.^[2][3] One additional person was injured in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.^[6] News reports identified the target of the attack as Giffords, a Democratrepresenting Arizona’s 8th congressional district.^[2] She was shot through the head at point-blank range, and her medical conditionwas initially described as “critical”.^[2][3]

Snow’s position can be summed up by an often-repeated part of the essay:

A good many times I have been present at gatherings of people who, by the standards of the traditional culture, are thought highly educated and who have with considerable gusto been expressing their incredulity at the illiteracy of scientists. Once or twice I have been provoked and have asked the company how many of them could describe the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The response was cold: it was also negative. Yet I was asking something which is the scientific equivalent of: Have you read a work of Shakespeare’s?^[5]

I now believe that if I had asked an even simpler question — such as, What do you mean by mass, or acceleration, which is the scientific equivalent of saying, Can you read? — not more than one in ten of the highly educated would have felt that I was speaking the same language. So the great edifice of modern physics goes up, and the majority of the cleverest people in the western world have about as much insight into it as their neolithic ancestors would have had
