Archie Loeb was the son of Russian immigrants, Hyman and Sarah Loeb, who settled in Columbia County. He was born April 14, 1921, and died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015.
He served his country in World War II, then worked for a brief time in Chicago before moving to Watertown in the 1940s to “help” his brother, Bill, in the family business — recycling of scrap metal. Their father started the family business in 1923 as a junk dealer in Columbus dealing in metals, rags, paper and rubber. Under the leadership of Bill and Archie the company evolved into one of the best, safest and most respected scrap metal processors in the country, obtaining ISO and OHSAS certifications and offering honorable employment to hundreds of employees throughout the years. The business today operates yards in four cities in the Midwest.
Archie took Institute Scrap Iron and Steel seminars at Michigan State, Kellogg Institute and UW-Wisconsin NASMI courses. He also had a lot of hands-on learning.
He was an active member of Institute of Scrap Recyclers Industries Inc. He was a member of Kiwanis International for 59 years. He served on the board of directors of Opportunities Inc., Fort Atkinson. He was involved with the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Watertown for two decades.
He enjoyed horses and had a horse or team of horses in the Watertown Fourth of July parade for 51 consecutive years.
In 2008 the city of Watertown named the Main Street bridge after Archie Loeb …

He is survived by his wife, Annabelle; a son, Neal (Kellie) Loeb, Watertown, and a daughter, Jan (Marc Shovers), Madison; five grandchildren, Patsy, Morgan and Seanna Loeb, Ben and Sam Shovers; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

But when I traveled up South Church Street last week, something I have done countless times over almost five decades, the view was blinding and like none that I had ever seen.
The addition of 12-by-7-inch copper shingles to the church’s spire has made this centerpiece of the city stand out even more, especially on a sunny but crisp fall day.
“It’s always been a landmark and this adds to the prominence of the spire itself,” said the Rev. Dan Ganshert. “It’s a real statement about the importance of the faith in the community of Watertown.”
The copper shingles are part of a $1.2 million roofing and maintenance project that has been under way since June. The church has been shrouded in a maze of scaffolding but over the next few weeks, the almost 200-foot-tall tower of pipes from Badger Scaffolding in Green Bay will slowly be dismantled, revealing the finished work by Langer Roofing of Milwaukee and Hunzinger Construction of Brookfield.
But the project is more than just the addition of copper shingles to the spire.

BEAVER DAM, Wis. (AP) — Authorities say a young Watertown man’s desire for a sports car led him to kill the owner who had it up for sale and later commit suicide as police were closing in on him.
Two other young people are jailed in the killing of 31-year-old University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student and businessman Haroon Khan, who was reported missing last Wednesday night.
More details of the case emerged when one of them was charged today with aiding a felon.
The criminal complaint says 19-year-old Zachary Zaborek of Watertown failed to tell police that 20-year-old Travis Zoellick of Watertown told him Thursday of the killing, and he helped Zoellick evade police after that.
Police got a tip Friday that led them to Zoellick’s home late that night, but he shot himself to death in his bedroom before they could arrest him.
A 21-year-old Delafield woman is expected to be charged tomorrow.

In 2009 a fire at the “sprawling complex of 1.4 million square feet” at the 121-year-old Patrick Cudahy meatpacking plant “drained [Milwaukee’s] water supply and tested the patience of hundreds of residents forced from their homes by the threat of smoke that billowed from the blaze through a second night.” The smell was described as “sometimes appetizing”, but the loss was termed “devastating”.[15] The cause of the fire was determined to be a military flare. In October 2009, two brothers were sentenced to 90 days in jail each for causing the fire.[16]

A good many times I have been present at gatherings of people who, by the standards of the traditional culture, are thought highly educated and who have with considerable gusto been expressing their incredulity at the illiteracy of scientists. Once or twice I have been provoked and have asked the company how many of them could describe the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The response was cold: it was also negative. Yet I was asking something which is the scientific equivalent of: Have you read a work of Shakespeare’s?[5]
I now believe that if I had asked an even simpler question — such as, What do you mean by mass, or acceleration, which is the scientific equivalent of saying, Can you read? — not more than one in ten of the highly educated would have felt that I was speaking the same language. So the great edifice of modern physics goes up, and the majority of the cleverest people in the western world have about as much insight into it as their neolithic ancestors would have had.[5]
