On the night of July 3, 1954, Sheppard and Marilyn were entertaining neighbors at their lakefront home (demolished in 1993)[1] on Lake Erie at 28944 Lake Road[2] in Bay Village, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, just west of the city. The property itself abutted the shore of Lake Erie, near the west end of Huntington Reservation. While they were watching the movie Strange Holiday, Sheppard fell asleep on the daybed in the living room. Marilyn walked the neighbors out.

The shooting occurred in theater 14[10] during the 7:10 p.m. screening of Trainwreck, held at the Grand 16 movie theater in Lafayette, just 60 miles (97 km) west of Baton Rouge.[2] Houser, 59, went to the theater alone, bought a ticket ten minutes late into the movie,[11] and sat for several minutes in the theater’s second-to-last row. Including Houser,[12] there were 25 people in the theater and 300 people in the building.[13][14][15] Houser was armed with a Hi-Point Model JCP .40-caliber handgun[1] and equipped with two 10-round magazines. Shortly before 7:30 p.m., he stood up, pulled out the handgun from his pants, and started shooting indiscriminately while walking down the steps. Houser fired at least 13 rounds and reloaded once. He killed two people and injured nine others.[16][17][18][19]
The first two people he shot were sitting right in front of him.[13] The shooting was contained to one theater.[20] After the shooting ended, Houser exited the theater through a side door and apparently tried to head for his vehicle while blending in with survivors. However, upon noticing police sirens, he retreated back inside the building and fired three more shots at fleeing moviegoers. Then, he committed suicide.[12][19][21][22][23]
Prior to the shooting, two police officers were already on duty at the 16-screen multiplex. Four other officers responded to the scene in less than a minute after receiving a 7:28 p.m. report of the shooting. 6][7][8][9]

Willie March, the sheriff of Holmes County where the killings occurred, said Saturday he had been briefed by police from the town where the killings occurred and Mississippi Bureau of Investigation officials who took part in Sanders’ interrogation.
Sanders confessed in the interrogation to the killings and gave no reason for the crimes, March said.

The mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Tom Barrett, was beaten bloody on Saturday night as he rescued a grandmother and 1-year-old girl from a young man who police described as a violent and vicious thug and a “local knucklehead”.
Barrett today is recovering in hospital from head and hand wounds, with local media speculating he received the latter after punching his assailant. Milwaukee police have arrested 20-year-old Anthony Peters in the attack, though he has not been charged. The mother of Peters’s ex-girlfriend and his baby daughter were unhurt.
On Saturday night Barrett was leaving the Wisconsin state fair with his sister, niece and two daughters when he heard a woman crying for help. Barrett, who was walking to his car, instructed his sister to take the children out of harms way, then confronted the intoxicated man and tried to calm him. The man had threatened to shoot himself and others, police said.
When Barrett took out his mobile phone to call authorities, the man attacked him with a pipe, police said. Barrett’s niece retrieved the phone and called police. The attacker fled upon hearing police sirens.
Peters, who police said has a long criminal record, was arrested 13 hours later. Police said the attacker did not know who Barrett was. The assault occurred in West Allis, a Milwaukee suburb.
“Tom stepped up and did the right thing,” Barrett’s brother John Barrett said Sunday, choking back tears. “Tom’s efforts protected the woman and the child. His efforts also protected members of our family. We are extremely proud of Tom’s selflessness and his courage.”
Tom was hospitalised after the attack. He is expected fully to recover.
“Last night he acted like the good citizen that he is,” Milwaukee’s police chief, Edward Flynn, told reporters yesterday. “He not only risked serious injury but he endured serious injury in order to defend somebody who was weaker than their assailant.”
Barrett, a 55-year-old former state legislator and five-term US congressman, was first elected in 2004 and was re-elected in 2008 with 79% of the vote. Milwaukee, a former brewing capital, has a population of about 600,000. It is about 80 miles north of Chicago in the US mid-west.
